“We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect.” ~ anais nin
epilogue…. to begin at the end is something that comes naturally to me… whether you start with where you want to end, or end with where you began, it’s thinking in a particular direction, in reverse ~ it’s connecting the dots looking backwards, it’s making sense of your life in retrospect even though we must always trust in the future ~ “live forwards.” And another way of saying it ~in honor of Bob Marley’s birthday today ~ “in this great future you can’t forget your past…” ~ that delicate balance between that which has gone and that which will come ~ where we inhabit a continual present of now-ness in whatever I/Thou relationship we want to honor in the moment… But, it wasn’t until I read a thought piece by Karl Heiselman (from Apple retail marketing) recollecting the affect of a teacher at RISD ~ product designer/cultural anthropologist Sara Little Turnbull who asked students to do a homework assignment that involved “picturing in detail what you want your life to be like ten years in the future” ~ that I realized this is how I approach everything in life ~ making clothes, editing films, curating dinners, visualizing galas, designing exhibitions and ~ now, gathering salons. In many ways I begin with thinking about how I want people to feel ~ not just the observers, but the participants… “Starting with your morning,” Sara said “design a day in your life.” … This is how I always enter into a new world ~ just like Peter Sellars reminded me years ago ~ “imagine a world, create it and then live in it.” Or, in Karl’s words which ended his piece ~ “Begin at the end. Then, begin,” So I begin with this ~ an end that hasn’t yet happened (and hopefully will always be something intangible out there ~ an idea, a feeling, a sense of community.) As I write, salon #103 is being planned for NYC for She-Can, as well as a gathering for Boston Review Magazine ~… So we will begin with a plan-in-motion and then a midway point (between #1 in February 2012 and #103 in February 2018) which was my guiding goal made manifest as an edible installation at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in December of 2015 ~ a visual collage of what the art of gathering has been, and still is, all about…

“Join YBCA for a winter celebration salon installation by anthropologist and artist Cari Borja. Borja invites us to explore the history of the art of gathering and the history of the salon. For centuries, the tradition of the salon has provided people with a physical and mental space to eat, interact, and connect through the act of gathering around a communal table. Borja examines the balance between all of the aspects that go into creating such a gathering, including the “metaphorical lightness of the gathering and the weight of responsibility we have to our community.” Borja, with the help of local winemakers, chefs and designers will bring together images, food, wine, a visual collage of films on and about the art of gathering around food, experimental sound scores, and members of the San Francisco Bay Area community.”

“…the people who move through the streetsare all strangers.
At each encounter,they imagine a thousand thingsabout one another;
meetings which could take place between them, conversations, surprises, caresses, bites.
But no one greets anyone;eyes lock for a second,
then dart away, seeking other eyes, never stopping… something runs among them,
an exchange of glanceslike lines that connect one figure with another and draw arrows, stars, triangles,until all combinations are used up in a moment,
and other characters come on to the scene… ”~ italo calvino
