What I am Learning in P3 – 2015/16

Term 1

Literacy and Language: Practising spelling rules in active ways; Joining in handwriting using the PenPals scheme; Working cooperatively in groups to practise speaking and listening skills; Writing for an increasingly sustained time and for a variety of purposes and audiences; Developing reading skills during group work and answering comprehension questions which require re-reading the text; Reading whole class books to analyse a range of texts with increasingly complex ideas.

Numeracy and Mathematics:

Practising different ‘Learn Its’ each term in order to speed up recall of number facts; Recognising and recording numbers in different formats; Learning the 2, 5 and 10 times tables; Learning to use the 100 square, empty number lines and partitioning to work out and record addition and subtraction calculations; Learning a variety of strategies to solve calculations; Learning what ‘one quarter’ means; Giving and following directions; Telling the time (quarter to and quarter past and multiples of 5 minutes); Exploring different ways to pay for items using coins and notes.

Health and Wellbeing:

Emotional Health – Continuing to develop ‘Cool in School’ strategies to cope with situations we encounter in our daily lives.

Physical Education – Working both as individuals and as members of a team in PE lessons, Ms Hastie will teach one lesson per week.

Science: Exploring materials and their properties, developing understanding of how the body functions and learning about basic food chains.

Social Studies: Our Local Area – Developing a mental map of the local area and using this to create and use maps; identifying different types of housing.

Technologies:  Using problem solving skills to make junk models; using technology regularly to enhance learning in different subject areas with a focus on word processing.

Religious and Moral Education: Developing values and beliefs through religious stories – revisiting the Christmas story and looking at how angels are described in the Bible.

Expressive Arts:  Focusing on the artist Lowry and the composer Tchaikovsky; Creating and performing short drama sequences linked to a class novel.

 

Term 2

Literacy and Language:

Writing –Use a variety of openers to make my writing more interesting.

Reading – Listen to, read, recite and perform poems and look at different structures and language patterns in poetry.  Answer comprehension questions in my reading group and give reasons for my answers.

Listening and Talking – Know when to listen and when to talk, when to ask questions and how to respond with respect, when working with my learning partner.

Numeracy and Mathematics:

We will be covering the following areas of Maths though our context, The Birthday Party: 4 operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), fractions, shape, pattern, measure, time, information handling.

Number

·         Recognise and record numbers in different formats.

·         Count forward and back from various starting numbers and in a variety of jumps.

·         Use different strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems.

Measure

·         Use the correct units and instruments of measure to use for a given task.

Multiplication and Division

·         Recall facts from the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

·         Multiply using both mental and written strategies.

Health and Wellbeing: Identify different emotions people can have and discuss situations in which we feel a particular way.

Science: Exploring materials and their properties, developing understanding of how the body functions and learning about basic food chains.

Social Studies: Ancient Egypt – I can compare aspects of ancient Egyptian life with my own.

Technologies: Explore applications on various digital media to enhance my learning across the curriculum.

Religious and Moral Education: Understand the importance of weddings and compare wedding traditions between people in our community.

Expressive Arts: Experiment with and use different materials to make attractive and colourful designs; Make and present a creative dance; Use my voice and musical instruments to experiment with sound, rhythm, pitch and dynamics.

Term 1

Literacy and Language: Careful listening and taking turns to talk in a group; recognising the letters of the alphabet and their sounds and beginning to write these down; reading some 3 letter words.

Numeracy and Mathematics: Counting, ordering and understanding numbers; making a graph and discussing what it means; following, continuing and creating patterns using shapes and colours.

Health and Wellbeing: Moving safely around the gym, listening and responding to instructions.

Science: Naming parts of the body and identfying the senses we use to explore the world; Describing forces as a push or a pull and talking about how it can make an object move.

Social Studies: Exploring and discovering where Lighthouses can be found according to the local environment.

Technologies: Using the smartboard and apps to develop and practise my new skills; using imagination to build models with construction materials.

Religious and Moral Education: Exploring the celebration of Christmas.

Expressive Arts: Using a range of materials to create art works; using mime and language to take part in drama groups; keeping a steady beat and singing as part of a group.

Term 2

Literacy and Language:

Tell the class about my favourite book and listen to what others have to say.

Use the sounds and tricky words I have learned to write some words and I am beginning to use them in simple sentences.

Discuss the main events and characters in my reading book.

Numeracy and Mathematics:

Recognise coins, their values and I am beginning to count totals for myself.

Identify and name 2D and 3D shapes.

Use different strategies to work out addition sums.

Health and Wellbeing:

Work cooperatively in groups to solve problems and complete tasks for the pirate topic.

Travel on foot in different ways and balance on one or more body parts.

Science:

Identify objects that use electricity and discuss basic electrical safety.

Identify material properties and select materials suitable for a particular purpose.

Social Studies:

Discuss how things have chaned since Granny’s time.

Technologies:

Understand the ways technology can be used to help me learn.

Explore changes in technology since my grandparents were at school.

Religious and Moral Education:

Deal with situations which may be fair or unfair by using skills from ‘Cool in School’.

Expressive Arts:

Use increasing detail in my paintings and drawings.

Use facial expressions and change my voice to explore real-life situations.

Recognise fast and slow music.
