Durango High School Marketing and DECA

Durango High School DECA School Travel Opportunities

Aristotle once said, "For the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them"

DECA prepares students to become efficient business travelers to attend leadership conferences around the Unites States.  Experiential learning is the process of making meaning from direct experience, i.e., "learning from experience"   Students must be an active DECA member, maintain academic excellence, and in some cases pre-qualify to attend conferences.   Not all DECA members will attend each conference.

Colorado Springs: DECA State Leadership Conference, held late February

2013-14 Durango DECA members were amazed at the Colorado Gators Reptile Park, which is on the way to the Colorado DECA State Leadership Conference in Colorado Springs. Students learned about their business model of providing a safe place for unwanted exotic pets and the economics of operating a fish farm in the San Luis Valley. Below, a DHS DECA 9th Grader qualifies for Sports and Entertainment Marketing event ....just kidding!
DECA members earned a luxurious stay at The Broadmoor where the DECA State Leadership Conference is held annually each February.   Below, a student celebrates her finals medal from her balcony overlooking Cheyenne Mountain.  Three DHS DECA members qualified for finals and two advanced to DECA ICDC in its first year back at DHS in at least two generations!
DECA members who qualify for ICDC (DECA nationals) always have input on excursions during the conference.  These two students wanted to visit Atlanta's prestigious Emory University  and experience the ancient wonders of Emory's Michael C. Carlos Museum.  Below, they prepare for their successful presentation before the DECA judges.  These DHS DECA members met and networked with students from around the world.
We always try to mix fun and learning while on a DECA trip, such as this lantern tour to Cave of the Winds in Colorado Springs. We learned about how caves were formed and Cave of the winds' early explorer history while having fun on the tour. The general manager discussed the challenges of marketing a natural wonder to the public.  2013
The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo gave us a special "behind the scenes" tour and discussed the promotional strategies of the zoo and its role within the Colorado Springs Community.  The tour guides discussed careers within zoos that go beyond zookeeper roles.  2011
While in Southern California, students toured the critically acclaimed Getty Center and given a challenge to find art examples in impressionism, the Renaissance  and more.  We also had a private visit with a curator to discuss acquisitions and museum marketing as a career option.  2013

While in Malibu, DECA students toured Pepperdine University to find out application procedures and qualifications needed.  While on DECA trips, the advisor makes every effort to give students a chance to visit colleges and to ask the right questions of admission reps and students while on campus. Other recent DECA trips included visits to: Louisville University, Emory, Georgia Tech, University of Utah U, UCLA, The City University of New York, Fordham U, Columbia University in the City of New York.  Photo 2013
